It got to the point where one classmate would bring in their copy of the SpongeBob SquarePants soundtrack every day, and convince the teachers to play it for parties and quiet time. We did rounds of the "F.U.N." song on the school bus we all competed to see who could sing "The Campfire Song" the quickest and if anyone wanted to annoy another student, the quickest way was to break into a round of Spongebob's "Krusty Krab Pizza" ditty, attempting to come up with the loudest and most obnoxious iterations of the song as we possibly could.

And in the early 2000s, there was no way to entertain a group of kids easier than to start singing one of the songs from SpongeBob SquarePants.Īccording to a DVD commentary by the show's creative director, Derek Drymon, when developing the infamous SpongeBob SquarePants theme song, "Steve 's idea was to try to make the most annoying song you can, to - so when Saturday morning, when kids turn the TV on and parents are trying to sleep, you have this pirate screaming in the other room for the kids to jump on the floor." That mix of obnoxious, childlike nature - the sing-song pattern of the dialogue and lyrics, the cheery, upbeat music, and the proliferation of jokes - exemplifies everything that makes SpongeBob so addicting and entertaining to kids of all ages.Įvery field trip, every class party, any excuse for a singalong that you could possibly imagine had my fifth grade class singing SpongeBob songs. It was (and still remains, based on the proliferation of SpongeBob memes all these years later) relatable and entertaining in equal measure. Created by Stephen Hillenburg - who passed away on this week - the show taught us all about the importance of friendship, about the joys of finding happiness and humor in everything, about finding your passion and taking pride in the things you do, and, perhaps most importantly, about embracing the things that made you an individual and maybe even a little weird. There was, and still is, a lot to love about SpongeBob. Playing basketball helped, as did joining the school's Girl Scouts troop, but I really felt like part of the group when we all bonded over our shared love of SpongeBob SquarePants, which was just starting to become the cultural phenomenon that we know and love. And while the kids in my class weren't unfriendly, it was a bit of a struggle to try and find my place in this tight-knit group of classmates. Of course it turns out to be a far stickier plan than he imagined. When I was in the fifth grade, I transferred from a public school to a small private school, making me the new kid amongst a group of students who had known each other since Pre-K. So SpongeBob attempts to steal the gum from his own house and hide it. But he can't let Patrick know that his gift has to go, that would hurt the pink star's feelings. Whatever it is, SpongeBob decides that home may not be the best place for this present. Maybe it's the moldy pizza or the smelly sock attached to it, or the fact that the gum is starting to talk to him. However, once he finally fits the giant wad of gum into his house, it slowly starts to creep him out. This gift is the coolest thing in the world. SpongeBob presents Patrick with a fancy robot, and Patrick gives his favorite Sponge his most prized possession, an enormous ball of used chewing gum. The Gift of Gum: It's Best Friends Day and SpongeBob and Patrick trade Best Friend presents. When a disappointed SpongeBob realizes that his entire day has been sacrificed, his friends rally around him to give their thanks and make sure his day really is the best ever. But this costs him every item on his perfect agenda. Each of his friends is having a problem which SpongeBob naturally sets out to solve. But the day does not go exactly as planned. Then he is going to meet Sandy for a little Ka-Ra-Tay, followed by jellyfishing with Patrick, and Squidward's clarinet recital. First he gets to work at the Krusty Krab. Best Day Ever: SpongeBob is going to have the best day ever.
